How to Price MTD Services for 2026. Here’s What the Survey Shows So Far

As Making Tax Digital (MTD) moves closer for sole traders, the big question for bookkeepers is: how should you be pricing MTD services?

That’s exactly what we asked in the 2025 6FB Summer Survey, and the results so far are eye-opening.

With 60 responses already in, we’re getting a real sense of where the industry is heading, but we want more data. Want to know how your pricing compares? Take the survey to get access to the full results: https://6fbsummer.scoreapp.com/p/summer2025

Let’s take a look at what we’ve learned so far and why it matters.

A Wide Range of Price Expectations

One thing is clear: there’s no single answer when it comes to pricing MTD services. The responses show a real mix of expectations, from very low fees to premium pricing.

  • 28% of respondents expect to charge between £251 and £500 per year for MTD services.
That’s the most common range so far, suggesting this is where many bookkeepers feel comfortable.
  • 12% are aiming for a £101–£250 annual fee, possibly reflecting simpler services or entry-level packages.
  • 7% plan to charge between £501–£1000, which could be linked to more hands-on support or bundled services.

This mix tells us that bookkeepers are tailoring their pricing to suit their clients, and their own businesses. And that’s a good thing.

But… Many Still Aren’t Sure

One of the most interesting findings so far? 32% of respondents said they “don’t know” how much they’ll charge.

That’s a huge number with such a short amount of time to go.

There’s still a lot of uncertainty around MTD. Some bookkeepers may not feel confident in their value. Others might be waiting to see what the market does. Either way, this uncertainty creates an opportunity.

If you can get clear on your pricing and how you communicate it, you’ll be ahead of a third of your peers.

Premium Pricing and Opt-Outs

At the higher end of the spectrum, 4% of bookkeepers said they expect to charge over £2,000 per year for MTD services. These are likely specialists dealing with complex clients, or perhaps offering all-inclusive digital tax packages.

Meanwhile, 12% said they don’t offer MTD services at all.

This could be because they’ve chosen to niche away from sole traders, or they’re not ready to offer support for MTD yet. But as MTD becomes mandatory, clients will be looking for answers, so there’s definitely an opportunity here for those who are prepared.

How to Price MTD Services and why it matters…

Whether you’re just starting out or already running a successful practice, knowing how others are pricing MTD services helps you make better business decisions.

Here’s what the early results tell us:

  • There’s no one size fits all, bookkeepers are pricing based on service level, client type, and business model.
  • A large chunk of the industry is still unsure, if you can set a price with certainty, you’ll stand out.
  • There’s room at both ends of the market, from entry-level services to high-value, premium packages.
