How To Get More From Your Software

We get it. The next shiny thing that’s going to drain your attention is here. But surely you have something that can already do that? Or a version of that?

At Accountex London in May 2024, we decided to ask Number Ninja, Emma James and Tech Queen, Kristy Glenister just how you make the most of the software you already have.

Top Tips For Getting More From Bookkeeping Software

  • Map out all the software you currently use and look for any duplications to save money
  • Check for hidden or underutilised features by scheduling calls with your software account managers
  • Address specific pain points in your business processes and find ways to automate or streamline tasks using existing software features
  • Look up tutorials on YouTube or online courses to learn new ways of using the software you’re already paying for
  • Ask other bookkeepers what features they use to get ideas on maximising your current software investments

Are You Aware Of These Features?

Some of the hidden gems Kristy and Emma discussed include:

  • Utilising calendar booking features that are already included in many Microsoft 365 subscriptions rather than paying separately for apps like Calendly
  • Customising reports and workflows in Xero to minimize time spent in Excel
  • Leveraging the Insights section in Xenon Connect for client management reports rather than buying additional software
  • Using Slack bots to automate notifications about client document uploads or self-assessment questionnaires
  • Exploring new apps within Microsoft 365 like Loop for to-do notes and task management
  • Learning video editing and other creative tools within software subscriptions rather than paying for courses.
