Yes. With Xero’s new automatic bank reconciliation powered by JAX, you can automate large parts of a bank rec on eligible plans. And you can still keep full control over what gets reconciled.
This is HUGE. As of November 2025, Xero is rolling out automatic bank reconciliation in beta. The goal is to automatically reconcile more than 80% of bank statement lines in real time. So, instead of manually clicking “OK” on hundreds of lines after a week away, bookkeepers can let JAX handle high confidence matches. Then you can spend your time reviewing, correcting exceptions and supporting clients.
This is exactly the direction we, Zoe Whitman and Jo Wood, have been preparing people for through The 6 Figure Bookkeeper and The Bookkeepers’ Collective. We want you to have less repetitive admin, and more time to off advisory services and client support. In this article we’ll share what JAX does (and doesn’t) do, who can use it, and how to get ready to turn it on as soon as the feature lands in your Xero organisations.
This article includes paid promotion for our partner, Xero.
How can you automate a bank rec?
Automating a bank rec means letting software match and post transactions for you, based on rules and AI. Crucially, you will stay responsible for the accuracy of the final ledger.

We know you spend hours each week:
- Clicking through every bank line manually
- Matching payments to invoices and bills
- Coding subscriptions and regular direct debits
- Fixing errors and rework caused by rushed reconciliations
We know you hate the feeling in your stomach you get when faced with 200 bank lines after a few days off. Automation changes that. Instead of doing every click, you become the supervisor of a smart system that:
- Suggests or completes high confidence matches
- Flags exceptions
- Keeps a clear log of what was auto reconciled
Xero’s JAX automatic bank reconciliation is built specifically for the financial workflows you run every day as a bookkeeper.
How JAX automatic bank reconciliation works in Xero
JAX automatic bank reconciliation sits directly inside Xero’s existing bank rec screen and works “behind the scenes” only when confidence is high.
According to Xero’s November 2025 product update:
JAX auto reconciles high confidence transactions.
It learns from the organisation’s reconciliation history and anonymised patterns across Xero to predict matches. Where confidence is high, it posts the entry automatically.
Keep visibility with the “Reconciled” page.
Every transaction posted by JAX appears on a dedicated “Reconciled” page. You and your clients can review, adjust or reverse anything at any time.
You decide which bank accounts are automated.
Automation can be turned on or off per bank account. If an account is more complex (for example, lots of mixed personal and business spending), you can keep that manual while automating cleaner accounts.
The goal: over 80% of lines, reconciled in real time.
Xero’s stated aim is for JAX to automatically reconcile more than 80% of bank statement lines in real time, significantly reducing the volume of manual work.
We think this is great. But we know you might be concerned.
Why bookkeepers are still essential
Even with JAX doing a large chunk of the bank rec, bookkeepers remain indispensable. Automation changes how you work rather than whether you’re needed.
Here’s what still relies on human expertise:
- Judgement calls and edge cases
Not every transaction is straightforward. Directors’ loans, misallocated payments and partial receipts still need a human brain. - Data quality and coding logic
JAX learns from past behaviour. If accounts have been coded inconsistently, a bookkeeper is needed to correct the logic so the AI has a good foundation. Garbage in = garbage out after all. - Explaining the numbers to clients
Business owners still ask: “So what does this actually mean?” Automation frees time so you can answer that question, not spend hours coding transactions. - Compliance and ethics
HMRC doesn’t accept “the AI did it” as an excuse. You and your clients remain responsible for ensuring records are complete, accurate and compliant.
We’ve worked with hundreds of bookkeepers and we consistently see that clients value clarity, context and conversation far more than clicks and coding. Automation simply gives you more space to deliver that value.
Who can use JAX automatic bank rec – and when?
Automatic bank reconciliation powered by JAX is not being switched on for every Xero user at once.
According to Xero, the initial beta release is:
- Available on
- Xero Grow (Australia, New Zealand and the UK)
- Growing (US)
- Standard plans globally and above
- Rolling out gradually.
The beta started rolling out in the week of 20 November 2025 and will continue over the following weeks. Organisations will see an in-product message and guided tour when they become eligible. - Controlled at organisation and bank-account level.
Automation is switched on per bank account, giving advisors and subscribers granular control.
We had to ask our accountant (yes we have an accountant) to switch on our own access to JAX so expect to need to enable this for customers whose subscriptions you manage.
For UK bookkeepers, that means:
- Some clients will see JAX in their Xero organisations before others
- Practices will temporarily manage a mix of JAX enabled and traditional bank rec workflows
- It’s worth mapping which clients are on eligible plans now, so you know where to expect the feature first
Xero’s own “how to use automatic bank reconciliation” article and demo video are kept current and are the best reference for step-by-step setup.
How automating bank rec changes pricing and positioning
Once JAX is reconciling a large percentage of lines, hourly billing for bank rec becomes even more problematic.
If a bookkeeper currently charges “3 hours a week for bank rec”, and JAX cuts that to 30 minutes, the billable time shrinks even though the value to the client (accurate, up-to-date records) remains the same. Xero’s case studies already reference bookkeepers saving multiple hours per week using JAX, without any loss of accuracy.
This reinforces a shift that we have championed for years:
- Move away from hourly billing for core bookkeeping tasks (use this resource to help you).
- Price for outcomes, not minutes
- Use automation as part of a “Gold Standard” service – fast, accurate numbers plus clear explanation and support
For practices on the journey to a six figure income, this is a chance to redesign packages so bank rec is included as a core, largely automated service, while reporting, forecasting and advisory are framed as higher value add-ons.
Getting practically ready to turn on JAX
You don’t need to wait for the in-app message to start preparing. There are several practical steps you can take now:
- Clean up coding rules and bank rules
JAX learns from history. The cleaner the back data and rules, the more accurate the automation will be. - Identify “automation-friendly” bank accounts
Accounts with lots of regular, recurring transactions are good early candidates. Messy mixed-use accounts may be better left manual initially. - Review engagement letters and scope
If manual bank rec time will reduce, now is the time to align scope and pricing around outcomes rather than hours. - Plan how to use the time saved
Decide in advance how to use your freed up capacity. You might, for example, introduce monthly management reports, cash flow conversations or more proactive client outreach.
You will benefit most when you acknowledge that automation and AI are becoming part of bookkeeping.
FAQ: Can You Automate a Bank Rec in Xero?
Can you fully automate a bank rec with AI in Xero?
Xero’s JAX feature automates a large portion of bank reconciliation by auto-matching high confidence transactions, but it does not remove the need for human review and control. For UK bookkeepers working with small business clients, this means the majority of routine lines can be handled automatically while exceptions, adjustments and reviews remain part of the bookkeeper’s role. In other words, the process becomes “mostly automated, always supervised” rather than completely hands off.
Is Xero JAX automatic bank reconciliation free?
JAX automatic bank reconciliation is included for organisations on eligible Xero plans (such as Xero Grow in the UK), rather than being sold as a separate paid add-on. This means that as long as a client is on a qualifying plan, they can access JAX without extra subscription fees. However, it’s important to check current Xero plan details because availability can vary by region and plan type over time.
Which Xero plans include JAX automatic bank reconciliation?
As of late November 2025, automatic bank reconciliation powered by JAX is available on Xero Grow (Australia, New Zealand and the UK), Growing (US) and Standard plans globally and above. For UK bookkeepers, that means clients on Grow or any higher business plan should see the feature as it rolls out. Clients on lower or legacy plans may need to upgrade if they want to benefit from JAX.
If you can automate a bank rec, will AI bank replace bookkeepers?
No. JAX removes repetitive clicks and speeds up bank reconciliation. JAX is not designed to replace the professional judgement and client-facing role you hold as a bookkeeper. For small practices, this actually strengthens the case for focusing on advisory, cash flow support and explanations, since clients still need someone to interpret what the numbers mean. This aligns with the experience of members of The Bookkeepers’ Collective, where members report that clients value conversations and clarity more than the mechanics of data entry.
How accurate is JAX automatic bank reconciliation?
Xero’s early user feedback suggests that JAX is highly accurate when reconciling high-confidence transactions, with bookkeepers reporting both time savings and strong accuracy levels. However, accuracy still depends on the underlying data quality and past coding behaviour in each organisation. For UK bookkeepers, that makes it essential to tidy up any inconsistent coding and bank rules before relying heavily on automation.
How will I know when I can automate bank rec for a client?
Xero will display an in-product message and guided tour within each organisation when automatic bank reconciliation becomes available for that specific tenant. If you run a practice with access to multiple organisations, you can expect to see JAX appear at slightly different times across your client base, depending on plan type and rollout schedule. Keeping an eye on these messages, and on Xero’s product update blog so you can turn on the feature when it’s available.
Your Action Plan: Automating Bank Rec with JAX
- List clients on eligible Xero plans and note who will likely get JAX first.
- Clean up bank rules and coding for those clients so JAX has good data to learn from.
- Decide which bank accounts you’ll switch on first (start with simple, regular transaction accounts).
- Update packages and pricing to reflect outcomes, not hours of bank rec.
- Plan how you’ll use the time saved to offer more reporting, forecasting or advisory.
- When the in-app message appears, follow Xero’s product tour and try it for your own business first. Then switch JAX on for your chosen accounts.
- Review the Reconciled page regularly at first, building confidence in JAX before expanding automation to other clients.
Can you automate a bank rec?
If you’re feeling a mixture of curiosity and anxiety about what AI means for bookkeeping, we get it. It is normal to worry that automation could undercut the work that has always filled your days. However, as Xero’s JAX automatic bank reconciliation shows, the real opportunity is to hand over repetitive clicks while doubling down on the human skills clients value most.
For practices ready to step into that future, we love that Xero are releasing this feature. Xero’s core experience will now directly feature JAX’s automatic bank reconciliation, with clear visibility and control designed for bookkeepers and accountants. If you’re already comfortable with Xero, you can move quickly to become “the human behind the AI”, not the bookkeeper replaced by it.
If you want to be ready when JAX appears in your clients’ Xero files, watch for Xero’s in-app updates and product tours. Switch this feature on for your own business and when you’re confident, turn on automatic bank reconciliation for suitable bank accounts. From there, you can let JAX handle the repetitive work while you focus on higher value conversations and support – or… just get some time back for yourself.
