Amelia McNamara – I have worked in finance roles for over 15 years, from small family-run businesses to large multinationals. I specialised in Accounts Payable roles, specifically around travel and expenses. I led a global team that managed the travel and expenses of over 13,000 employees. This meant I was on calls at 7 a.m. some mornings and 7 p.m. some evenings.
In 2022, after my first baby’s arrival, I faced the dilemma of continuing my career or sacrificing time with my daughter. I requested a part-time return to my role and was advised it wasn’t an option. Having lost my mother to cancer at the age of just 12, I knew how important family time was, so I walked away from the security of my job and started my own business.
I found Jo & Zoe and the 6FB community in October 2022. After a quick call with Zoe, I knew I had found the support and community I needed to start my business. I immediately purchased the six-month success program and launched my company in January 2023.
Before joining the 6FB, I knew very little about running a business; I had never worked in practice before, and no support was available from my accounting body in Ireland or any other group here. I had a lot of mindset work to do. After following the advice in the program (with some minor tweaks to suit Ireland), I am continuing to build my business. I know I am now ahead of other bookkeepers in Ireland regarding AML compliance, technology, and mindset. I have the confidence to help these fellow bookkeepers follow a better path by being the first Irish 6FB ambassador. I was also a finalist in the first Irish Xero awards for “Emerging Firm of the Year” in 2024.
I am free to be with the kids (I had my second baby in February 2024) while working hours that suit my family. I don’t need to ask permission to go on holiday or take a day off. Yes, being responsible for bringing in business and ensuring the bills are paid is scary, but had I not found the 6FB, I would have been charging a miserable hourly rate and probably be back in a job by now.
Annabel Barnes – In the wake of the pandemic, Annabel faced a pivotal moment. She founded Bluebells Bookkeeping in 2020 so that she could maintain her career whilst being able to provide support and care for her young family. Annabel knew she wanted to build a sustainable, profitable business, but she’d never done this before.
Annabel applied the lessons from The 6 Month Success Programme (just one of the trainings in The Bookkeepers’ Collective). Her practice began to flourish, her team expanded, and she achieved a milestone that once seemed out of reach – bringing her husband into the business as a partner. Month by month, her practice grew, eventually reaching the coveted 6-figure mark.
Bluebells Bookkeeping was a finalist at The Accounting Excellence Awards in 2023 in the category of Bookkeeping Team of the Year, and Annabel was named Bookkeeper of the Year at The Bookkeepers’ Awards 2023.
Karen Kennedy – A former Finance Director at a college, Karen found herself at a crossroads during the lockdown. With two young children at home and her husband at work, Karen’s work-life balance was non-existent, turning “night into day” to meet her responsibilities. The stress of trying to keep a college afloat with no students led her to reconsider her future plans. Karen took the decision to start her own practice amidst the pandemic with zero clients.
Joining us in July 2020 equipped Karen with the essential tools to lay down strong foundations for her fledgling business. Karen attributes her ability to place and maintain good profit margins while avoiding early mistakes to the programme. This approach is offering local youth employment opportunities and also allowing Karen to shape a new generation of tech-savvy, digital accountants. This yeae, Karen’s practice boasts a projected turnover of £300k with excellent profit margins and an NPS score of 100, a testament to her hard work, community values and the solid foundation provided by the Success Programme.
Karen’s business offers her the flexibility she sought, enabling her to balance professional success with being present for her family. Winning an Accounting Excellence Award underscores the high service level and client satisfaction her practice maintains. Looking ahead, Karen is focused on increasing monthly recurring revenue and maintaining a happy workforce.
